Your Houston 2006 NBA All-Star Weekend Party Guide

With All-Star Weekend 2006 in Houston fast approaching us, I’ve been getting quite a few requests to find out what parties are going on out there.  During this weekend, there are 1,001 parties going on starting Wednesday and running through Sunday.  For those whom this will be their first All-Star Weekend will soon find out that rational thinking goes out the window this weekend.  You’ll see what I’m referring to when you show up at a party without an advance ticket and learn the door charge for some of the better parties will be $200 and up.  A word to the wise for you partygoers, buy advance tickets and arrive early.  I’m talkin’ like 9PM.  For some parties you will not be able to roll up at 1AM talking about 'I have a ticket'.  Some of these spots will be at or near capacity and the police will deny you entrance much less the event producers.  I know for some of you it’s hard to make a commitment to purchase a ticket before you actually get there because, who knows what can happen once you get there?  You can be at the hotel and hear about a slew of other events that can be better than the event you bought advance tickets for.  You will be beat in the head with party flyers as soon as you step off the plane…’This ballers gonna here, This rapper’s gonna there, This video hoe’s gonna be naked yonder….It goes on and on.  But let’s be real, all of these parties can’t be poppin’.  So I decided to help you fish through all the clutter and give you a list of events I think will be worth while and some advance ticket info.

Thur. Feb. 16 – Ladies Night Out – The Grand Ballroom (1521 Austin St.)
For those ladies that may be in town a little early, LL Cool J will be hosting this event.  Can be a nice warm up for what’s to come.  Click Here for tickets.

Fri. Feb. 17 – Sun. Feb. 19 – Club AI – Houston Grand Plaza Hotel (8686 Kirby Dr.)
It appears as though these event planners have bought out the hotel for the weekend and have created a number of events centered around NBA All-Star Allen Iverson.  He’s slated to host each evening along with other celebrities including music video director Benny Boom and Trina on Fri, Buffie the Body, Nik (ANTM) and “Hoopz” from the Flavor of Love minstrel show on Sat. and the former two again on Sun.  Also NYC’s own DJ Self is slated to appear here throughout the weekend.  With all the parties going on this weekend, there is no reason why someone needs to go to the same place more than once within three days. AI and these celebs have their pick of the parties they want to attend, do you think they’re going to confine themselves here for 3 days straight?  Neither should you.  I would choose one day and stick to it if you go, but I would also expect walkthroughs from some these celebs on a night or two.  Which nights, I don’t know, these things are quite unpredictable.  For advance tix Click Here.

Fri. Feb. 17 – Sun. Feb. 19 – Marc & Taz All Star 06 – M-Bar (402 Main)
These Washington DC nightlife veterans (Marc & Taz) have taken over Houston’s famous M Bar for the weekend.  I did not get a chance to learn about who they’ll have appearing at their events, but by their track record and following both for All-Star Weekends and their home region, you’re bound for a good time.  If you enjoy partying in DC especially the infamous Club Love f/ka/ Dream then there’s an 8 out of 10 chance these gentlemen were responsible.  For advance tix Click Here.

Fri. Feb. 17 – Sun. Feb. 19 – Club Derrty– Hush (15625 Katy Freeway)
Multi-platinum rapper Nelly and The St. Lunatics will be taking over this venue for the weekend.  From the web ads I’ve seen thus far, I’m convinced this is the real deal.  From the lineup of celebrity co-hosts joining him I would look to pop in here on Fri. or Sat.  Sunday I could do without.  Nelly will be joined by Usher on Fri., NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and DJ Clue on Sat. and Jermaine Dupri on Sun. MTV is also supposed to filming their Direct Effect show all weekend if anyone cares.  For advance tix Click Here.

If you’re looking for something a bit more mature and laidback, I would recommend the next 3 events produced by Houston’s r2Entertainment.  Or you may want to consider these if you get locked out some of the previous parties mentioned.

Thur. Feb. 16 – Welcome to Houston All-Star Bash – La Strada (5161 San Felipe #100)
BET’s Mad Linx will be spinning while they’re supposed to be taping BET’s Road Show.

Fri. Feb. 17 – Gabrielle Union’s All-Star Bash – The University Club (5051 Westheimer)
Hosted by the lovely above named actress with BET’s Mad Linx spinning while they’re supposed to be taping BET’s Road Show.

Sat. Feb. 18 – The Finale – The University Club (5051 Westheimer)
If Friday’s guest was for the guys, Saturday’s guest is for the ladies.  Actor/singer Tyrese will be in the building.

For tickets to any of these three events, Click Here.

Fri. Feb. 17 – The Blackout Party – Jillian’s (7620 Katy Freeway)
What All-Star Weekend would be complete without a Puffy party?  Diddy and his Bad Boy affiliates are slated to be in the building, and his rep preceeds him so expect a good time.  Another plus is that the venue, Jillian’s is similar to “Dave and Busters” so you should be able to play games as well as party with Puff.  For those of you not familiar with any of these venues, just think of it as an adult Chuck E Cheese; video games with a fully stocked bar.  Look Here for tickets.

Fri. Feb. 17 – Triple Threat – Opus (412 Main)
Attention video girl/model stalkers.  This party is for you.  The trifecta of hostesses will consist of Esther Baxter (Juelz Santana – “Oh Yes”), Miss Lyric (50 Cent – “Candy Shop”) and Nikki aka Hoopz (Flavor of Love).  There’s not much more to it, but for those who fantasize about bagging a model chick, here’s your chance.  Look Here for tickets.

Fri. Feb. 17 – U.G.K. All-Star Celebration – Fox Sports Grill (5175 Westheimer Rd.)
Ultimate Hustler Dame Dash has enlisted the help of rappers U.G.K. to launch his Pro Keds sneaker line.  The party is also to serve as a welcome home affair for U.G.K.’s Pimp C.  I didn’t know he was away, but hey, making it back home from anywhere can be reason to celebrate.  For tickets call 713-439-1369.

Sat. Feb. 18 – The Royal Ball– Post Oak Hilton (2001 Post Oak Blvd.)
Brought to you by some of NY and NJ’s most time tested event producers, Reign Nightclub owner Don Pooh, Lenny the Barber and Prince Neyamu are bringing R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige into the building.  Given Don Pooh’s music industry career and his professional relationship with MJB makes these appearances damn near a certainty in my book.  NY’s own DJ Self will be on the turntables as well.  For tickets call 212-926-7736 or 201-647-7718 and tell em I sent ya.

Sat. Feb. 18 – Funk Flex All-Star Bash – The Grand Ballroom (1521 Austin St.)
A team of NYC’s veteran promoters headed by Jinglin’ Baby, Real Life Ent., Nitelife Ent. and Mook Diamond bring you the nation’s most reknowned hip-hop DJ, Funkmaster Flex.  Flex also brought along Houston rap phenom Paul Wall, 50 Cent nemesis Jadakiss, Dallas Maverick Jason Terry, Houston Rocket Rafer Alston and DJ Bobby Trends.  I ran into Real Life’s Issac Cashman who boasted this event was a top 5 party of the weekend.  So I’ll take his word for it and hold him to it.  Click Here for tickets.
